  • it helps with dexterity
  • it helps with eye & hand coordination
  • it helps with concentration
  • it increases math skills
  • it is relaxing to do
  • you can add it to other types of art
  • you can make stuff to give, or keep
  • you can do it with a brother, a sister, or friend
  • you can do it snuggled up with Mom or Grandma
  • and best of all, it's fun!!

  •  What You'll need:

I know sometimes it can be hard to find someone to teach you how to crochet. I was lucky, I had my Mom to help me, and then I was able to join her local crochet club and I learned even more!   If you want to give the gift of crochet to someone, here are some materials I recommend to get you started:

    1. Four-ply yarn (also known as worsted weight). Acrylic works best as it doesn't stick to the hook like cotton does. Make it a light color also to make learning easier.
    2. Plastic tapestry needles to weave ends in.
    3. A good pair of scissors. Blunt ends work well, just make sure it's not a pair that was used on paper as that dulls the blades.
    4. A good crochet hook that's easy to hold. A size "H" or "I" is great for first-timers.
    5. A little pail or lunch box to tote everything around in. I have one that's clear plastic, and like that I can see what's inside.
    6. A small bag of pony beads. You'd be surprised how easy it is to add beads to your projects.
    7. To complete the gift, a great how-to book; or you
can do like I did -- give a ball of yarn, a hook, and be willing to sit with your friends in the playground. It's a lot of fun to share what you know.
